NORWICH UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME CRITERIA & PROCESS FOR SELECTION

Those who wish to nominate a Norwich coach, player or team for induction into the Norwich University Athletic Hall of Fame may do so by mailing a letter of nomination and supporting information to: Tony Mariano, Director of Athletics, Norwich University, 158 Harmon Dr., Northfield, VT 05663.

The deadline for submitting nominations and supporting information for next year's class is April 30. Selections will be made in May 2013 and induction will take place in the fall. For consideration, individuals must have graduated in or before 2003, and preference will be given to class years ending in 8 and 3. There are four levels of membership. 

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Norwich Athletic Hall of Fame is to select and honor outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves in personal or public endeavors, people who have contributed significantly either to the development of these athletes or to the excellence of the athletic program, and teams who by their record on the playing field, have provided the university with lasting leadership and success.

MEMBERSHIP

There are four levels of membership into the Athletic Hall of Fame: 

  • Regular Membership
  • Honorary Membership
  • Team Membership
  • Distinguished Alumni Letter Winner Award

CRITERIA

Regular Membership

  • Individuals must have graduated from Norwich University
  • Have distinguished themselves by their outstanding athletic participation (All-American, All New England, ECAC All Star, Conference MVP/All Star, Record Holder, Leading Scorer, etc.)
  • Continued after graduation to distinguish themselves to their organizations through outstanding achievement
  • Serve as examples of outstanding character, courage and leadership which the University seeks to develop in its athletic program

Honorary Membership

  • Individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the University's athletic program
  • Individuals who have significantly contributed to the development of student-athletes who qualify for regular membership

Team Membership

  • Teams, which have distinguished themselves on the playing field (outstanding win- loss record, league championship, NCAA/ECAC tournament participation)
  • Teams, which have brought honor to the University
  • Teams which have provided to the University leadership, character and courage

Distinguished Alumni Letter Winner Award

  • Individuals must have graduated from Norwich University
  • Have lettered as a member of a varsity intercollegiate team
  • Continued after graduation to distinguish themselves to their organizations through outstanding achievement

NOMINATION PROCESS

  • Individuals or teams will be eligible for selection anytime after their 10th anniversary of their graduation or team participation
  • Any Norwich alumni, faculty, staff, or member of the selection committee may nominate individuals or teams for induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame
  • Anyone who nominates an individual or team must provide documentation (records, statistics, occupational information) and submit that with a completed Nomination Form to support their nomination
  • Nominations will be accepted by the selection committee up to the end of April of that year of selections
  • Individuals who are nominated but not selected will automatically be re-nominated or withdrawn by the selection committee on a yearly basis
  • Individuals are selected during the anniversary year of their graduation in increments of 5 or 10 years
  • Self-nominations to the NU Athletic Hall of Fame will NOT be accepted.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

  • Selections will be made once a year by the selection committee
  • Selections will be based upon the documentation provided to the committee and any other supporting information the committee may have (University records, yearbook information)
  • Nominees must receive a majority (2/3) of the vote by the committee

NUMBERS TO BE SELECTED EACH YEAR

  • Regular Membership-not more than six (6) individuals
  • Honorary Membership-one (1)
  • Team Membership-one (1)
  • Distinguished Alumni Letter Winner Award-not more than two (2)

INDUCTION CEREMONY

  • The induction ceremony date will be established by the selection committee
  • Nominees selected for induction shall be present at the ceremony
  • An 8 x 10 picture of the inductees (Regular, Honorary, Team and Distinguished Alumni Letter winner) will be displayed in the Athletic Hall of Fame Room
  • Inductees (Regular, Honorary and Distinguished Alumni Letter Winner) will receive a plaque at the time of their induction
  • Team members will receive a Hall of Fame Certificate
  • A Hall of Fame Banquet Program will be developed recognizing the accomplishment of all the inductees
