WALTHAM, Mass. – The fifth-seeded Norwich University baseball team traveled to take on fourth-seeded Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference first round matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lasers pulled away from the Cadets late for a 16-3 win, advancing to the second round and ending NU's season.
Lasell scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead before Norwich responded in the top of the fourth. Sophomore left fielder Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) launched a triple to right field that scored senior second baseman Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) to make it 2-1. Junior Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to left field that plated Doherty to tie the game 2-2.
The Lasers went to work offensively over the next few innings, scoring one in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth for a 7-2 lead. Norwich got one run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by freshman right fielder Nate Gehringer (Northampton, Penn.), scoring junior catcher Chris Leach (Vergennes, Vt.) and making it 7-3.
Lasell scored seven runs in the seventh and added two more in the eight for the 16-3 final.
Barlow, Caldwell and Gehringer each registered two hits apiece for the Cadets.
Junior Jake Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss for NU to finish the season at 1-7. He allowed six runs (four earned) on 11 hits over five innings of work. He walked three batters and fanned two.
The game marked the final game of the season for the Cadets and the final career games for Caldwell and fellow seniors Ed Gates (Griswold, Conn.), Leland Goodenough (Brookfield, Vt.) and Brandon Bursey (Tyngsboro, Mass.). Norwich closes the season at 7-23 overall.
