Football: Norwich Hands Out Awards At Annual Banquet

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University football team held its annual awards banquet last Saturday (Jan. 30), and the 2009 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) champions celebrated a tremendous season.

The event, which was held at NU's Plumley Armory, featured a recap of the 8-3 season, a featured speech by General Brooks, a highlight video and the presentation of varsity letters and a handful of individual awards.

The Coach Mike Yesalonia Team MVP Award was given to senior DB Donovan Brown. One of the team's captains, Brown turned in a remarkable season. The Corona, Calif., native led the team with six interceptions and three forced fumbles. He also listed third in tackles (57) and second in pass breakups (seven).

The Coach Barry Mynter Most Dedicated Player Award was presented to both junior LB Rocco DiMeco and junior OL Don Hanni. DiMeco, who stepped into the starting middle linebacker role this season, led the squad in tackles (86) and ranked second on the club in tackles for loss (12.0). Hanni was one of the unquestioned leaders of the offensive line, which helped the Cadets rack up nearly 300 rushing hards per game.

The Coach Joe Sabol Most Improved Player Award was given out to both junior TE Daniel Pellegrini and sophomore OL Rob Sturgis. Pellegrini saw his playing time increase dramatically following an injury to Derek Hungerford, and he stepped up his play on the field. He finished with two catches for 15 yards and a touchdown. Sturgis, meanwhile, helped anchor NU's offensive line as the team's center.

The Special Teams Award was given to both junior P Brian Segit and junior K Ryan Kelly. Segit continued his terrific punting this past fall, averaging 33.6 yards per punt and placing 24 of his 62 kicks inside the opponents' 20-yard line. Kelly, meanwhile, rebounded from a rough sophomore season to excel this past year. The third-year performer connected on 3-of-6 field goal attempts, while also knocking through 32-of-38 extra point attempts. He listed third on the team with 41 points.
