Men's Ice Hockey: Kashirsky And Klingensmith Earn ECAC Weekly Awards

Jan 22, 2008

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Just days after helping the Norwich men's hockey team to a weekend sweep of Babson and UMass-Boston, junior forward Nikita Kashirsky and sophomore goaltender Ryan Klingensmith were honored by ECAC on Tuesday as Kashirsky was named the league's "Player of the Week" and Klingensmith earned the conference's "Goalie of the Week" laurels.

The duo was instrumental in the Cadets' 1-0 road victory at then-No. 13 Babson on Friday night as Kashirsky scored the only goal of the game, and Klingensmith turned away all 29 shots that he faced. It marked the first career shutout for Klingensmith, who made 16 spectacular stops in the third period.

On Saturday afternoon, Kashirsky scored his 12th goal of the season as Norwich went to Boston and defeated UMass-Boston, 3-2, in overtime. The Cadets led 2-1 in the final minute, before the Beacons sent the contest into an extra session with a goal at the 19:35 mark. Rick Cleaver made sure that NU made it home with four points as the senior forward scored the game-winner with 1:23 to play in overtime.

Kashirsky ranks second on the team with his 12 goals, and is tied for second on the club with 20 points. The native of Moscow, Russia, has been one of the primary catalysts for the Cadets offense this season.

In four starts this season, Klingensmith has authored a sparkling 4-0-0 record. The Morton, Pa., native has forged an extraordinary .951 save percentage to go along with a miniscule 1.24 goals-against average.

Norwich (12-3-0, 8-1-0 ECAC East) remains atop the conference standings with 16 points. The Cadets, who enjoy a three-point cushion over second-place Babson, return to the ice at Kreitzberg Arena this weekend (Jan. 25-26) when they take on Trinity and Wesleyan. The NU-Trinity game will kick off the weekend on Friday at 7 p.m., with the Norwich-Wesleyan tilt slated for Saturday at 4 p.m.

Both games this weekend can be heard on the radio (WDEV AM 550 FM 96.1) and on the internet (http://www.cadetsradio.com/). Longtime Norwich broadcaster George Commo will handle play-by-play duties both contests.
