Men's Ice Hockey: McShane Among Nine Finalists For Division III "Coach Of The Year" Award

Mar 18, 2008

CAPE COD, Mass. - The American Hockey Coaches Association has announced the nine finalists for the men's hockey Division III "Coach of the Year" award, and Norwich head coach Mike McShane is among them.

McShane, who was named the ECAC East "Coach of the Year" after leading the Cadets to their ninth straight ECAC East regular season title, will be looking to win the award for the fourth time.

After winning the ECAC East regular season crown, McShane guided Norwich to its seventh ECAC East Tournament title in the last nine seasons. Now, he is leading the Cadets back to the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time since 2004. NU, which defeated Manhattanville 7-2 last Saturday night in the national quarterfinals, will be looking to win its third national championship under McShane.

The 13-year mentor will be behind the bench this weekend when Norwich faces top-ranked St. Norbert in the 2008 NCAA semifinals at Lake Placid, N.Y. It marks the seventh time McShane has guided the Cadets to an NCAA Division III Final Four appearance. In addition to the two national titles, NU has finished runner-up once, placed third twice and taken fourth place once.

This season Norwich skated to a 15-4-0 mark in ECAC East play. The Cadets, who have been ranked in the Top 15 nationally throughout the season, have authored a 23-6-0 overall record to date. The team's 23 wins are the most in a single season since the 2003-04 squad compiled a final record of 24-4-0.

McShane helped guide Norwich senior forward Rick Cleaver to ECAC East "Player of the Year" honors for the second straight season. He has won the Edward Jeremiah Award three times in his career at Norwich, earning the honor in 1997, 1999, and 2000.

The Edward Jeremiah Award is given annually to the top coach in Division III men's ice hockey. The Jeremiah Award is named in honor of former Dartmouth head coach Edward Jeremiah, and has been presented every year since 1970 to Division III's top coach. The award will be presented at the American Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year Banquet to be held in Naples, Fla., on Saturday, April 26.
