Men's Ice Hockey: NU Alum Kurtis McLean Scored First Career NHL Goal
UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Former Norwich University men's ice hockey player Kurtis McLean scored his first career NHL goal on Wednesday night, helping his New York Islanders to a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.
The 2005 Norwich graduate netted what proved to be the game-winning tally late in the first period when he took an up-ice pass and fired a rocket of a slap shot from the right wing past Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere. For his efforts, McLean was awarded named the second star of the game.
McLean was called up by the Islanders on Monday, and played his first career NHL game as a member of the Islanders against the Washingon Capitals.
McLean is not the only former NU player trying to make it in the National Hockey League. Keith Aucoin (NU '01) is currently in the Washington Capitals' system, after spending three seasons as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes' organization. Aucoin, who scored five goals and added 10 assists in 53 games with the Hurricanes, has played in three games for the Capitlas this season.
Aucoin is Norwich's all-time leader in points (240), while McLean is the program's all-time leader in goals (118). McLean ranks third in points (212), while Aucoin lists second in goals (116).
