Men's Ice Hockey: Kashirsky Signs Professional Contract With South Carolina Stingrays
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays' head coach/general manager Jared Bednar announced that former Norwich University standout Nikita Kashirsky has signed with the team. The Stingrays, who compete in the ECHL, are a minor league affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals.
Kashirsky recently finished his senior season at Norwich, leading the team in goals (17), assists (17) and points (34). He capped the season by being named the league's "Player of the Year" and earning a spot on the all-conference first team.
In four years with the Cadets, the Moscow, Russia, native produced 144 points (73 goals, 71 assists). He finished second on the team in scoring during the 2007-08 campaign, and claimed the ECAC East "Rookie of the Year" award following the 2005-06 campaign.
"I was impressed with his performance last summer at the Capitals' prospect camp," Bednar said. "It will certainly be a transition going from Division III hockey to the ECHL, but he is a talented and skilled player who has a knack for scoring goals. I am looking forward to seeing what he has to contribute to the team."
Prior to arriving at Norwich, the 6-0, 191-pound forward played one season for the Walpole Stars of the EJHL, totaling 48 goals and 18 assists for 66 points.
"It's very exciting to be here," said Kashirsky. "I am a little
nervous, but I am anxious to get out there."
Kashirsky made his professional debut on Saturday, March 7, in the
team's 1-0 shootout victory over the Charlotte Checkers. Kashirsky
scored the Stingrays' first goal in the shootout, helping the team
earn the win. South Carolina returns to action on Tuesday, March
10.
