Men's Hockey: Czarnota earns January honor from Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Sophomore goalie Chris Czarnota of the Norwich men's ice hockey team was named the January Open Division Athlete of the Month by the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) posted a 4-0 record in January that included shutout wins over St. Michael's, Middlebury and the University of New England. In his other outing, Czarnota allowed one goal on 16 shots. In all, he stopped 55 of 56 shots for a save percentage of .982 and a goals-against average of 0.25.

Over that span, Czarnota had a shutout streak of 229 minutes and five seconds, which ranks fourth on the all-time NCAA Division III list for consecutive shutout minutes.

Czarnota earned more votes than his junior Cadet teammate, Pier Olivier Cotnoir; Middlebury College senior basketball player Ryan Sharry, the December Open Division winner; Castleton State junior basketball player Mark Comstock; and Middlebury College women's hockey goalie Annabelle Jones, a freshman.
