BIDDEFORD, Maine – Junior forward Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) tallied five points and freshman forward Doug Lindensmith (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored a hat trick in his first career game to lead the No. 2-ranked Norwich men's ice hockey team to a 7-4 win over the University of New England in its season opener on Friday night.
After falling behind 1-0 on a goal in the first minute by UNE's Zach Lokey, Norwich scored four unanswered goals to take a commanding 4-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
Thomas tied the game at the 4:46 mark of the first period with a power play goal set up by Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec). Less than a minute later Travis Janke (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) gave NU a 2-1 lead when he tipped home a shot from Cotnoir at the point on another power play.
Junior Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.) gave Norwich (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC East) a two-goal lead at the 6:40 mark of the second period when he kissed a shot off the cross bar and into the net after Janke threaded the needle through the UNE defense to spring Mulvey all alone in the slot.
Lindensmith tallied his first goal of the night at the 14:05 mark of the second period with a top shelf backhand shot while standing on the doorstep of the crease to make it 4-1 Norwich off assists from Thomas and Tim Houston (North Andover, Mass.).
UNE (0-3-0, 0-3-0 ECAC East) didn't go away though as Nor'Easters scored three of the next four goals, starting with Nick Kolb's tally 1:28 into the third period on a power play to cut the deficit back down to two.
Lindensmith tallied his second of the game off an assist from Alec Thieda to briefly make it 5-2 at the 6:08 mark of the third period. UNE took advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity less than a minute later when Tyler Fluerent scored off assists from Scott McNanaman and Lokey.
UNE cut the deficit to 5-4 with 4:52 remaining when Adam Laite tallied his first goal of the year with assists from Chris Glover and Brent Bourgeois.
However, Thomas scored an empty netter with 1:07 remaining, and then Lindensmith put the icing on the cake with two seconds left to complete his hat trick and make it 7-4 Norwich.
Sophomore goalie Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) picked up the win for Norwich after stopping 16 shots. Ian Edwards took the loss for UNE after turning aside 31 shots to fall to 0-2-0 on the year.
The Cadets outshot UNE 38-20 and were 3-for-4 on the power play, while the Nor'Easters converted twice on four opportunities.
Norwich remained perfect all-time against UNE with the victory and extended its series lead to 5-0-0.
The Cadets return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel over to Gorham, Maine to take on the Southern Maine Huskies at 4 p.m.
