Men’s Hockey: Pichette’s hat trick leads Norwich to 8-1 exhibition win over Champlain College

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior forward Nick Pichette (Massena, N.Y.) scored a hat trick to lead the Norwich University men's ice hockey team to an 8-1 victory over Champlain College-Lennoxville in an exhibition game on Saturday night at Kreitzberg Arena.

Norwich scored twice in the first period with senior Anthony Flaherty (South Boston, Mass.) potting a rebound goal off an initial shot by Connor Evangelista (Wakefield, Mass.) to break open the scoring at the 2:09 mark.

Pichette notched his first of the game at the 10:26 mark, sniping a shot off the right post and into the back of the net on a breakaway after Cody Smith (Hudson, Mass.) head manned the puck up to him at center ice.

Champlain College got one back at the 2:42 mark of the second period with Jacob Sinclair beating NU starting goalie Braeden Ostepchuk (Lethbridge, Alberta) with a wrist shot to the blocker side. David Laroche and Tristan Lamothe picked up the assists.

However, Norwich regained the two-goal lead with 29 seconds left in the second period with Paul Russell (Andover, Mass.) beating Champlain College goalie Sean Julien five-hole from the left wing. Julien appeared to make the save initially, but the puck trickled through his pads and just crossed the goal line.

The Cadets broke the game wide-open in the third period with five goals, two coming from Pichette to seal the hat trick. William Pelletier (St. Jean Chrysostome, Quebec), Tyler Piacentini (South Weymouth, Mass.) and Smith added third-period tallies.

The game featured 23 total penalties with 12 on Norwich and 11 on Champlain College. Ostepchuk made one save in 30 minutes of action before leaving at the midway point of the second period. Senior Ty Reichenbach (Billings, Mont.) came on to make 10 saves in relief.

Norwich opens the regular season next Friday night when it hosts Endicott College at 7 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena.
