HENNIKER, N.H.— The Norwich University men's ice hockey team got two goals each from seniors Tyler Piacentini (South Weymouth, Mass.) and Nick Pichette (Massena, N.Y.) en route to a 4-3 victory over New England College on Saturday afternoon at Lee Clement Arena.
With the win, Norwich remains undefeated at 4-0-1 overall and 4-0-0 in NEHC action, while NEC falls to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in league play.
The Cadets led 2-0 after the first period following goals by Piacentini and Pichette. A score 38 seconds into the second frame from Piacentini gave the Cadets a 3-0 lead before NEC broke up the shutout with a goal by Adam Zollner at the 17:34 mark.
Norwich extended its lead to 4-1 with a power play goal by Pichette to open the third period. The Pilgrims took control from there, as Mike Whitehair scored his second goal of the season at the 9:16 mark to cut the deficit to two.
With 1:40 left to play in the game, NEC pulled goaltender Brett Kilar in exchange for an extra skater. With the clock ticking down, Carlos Fornairis shot from just outside the crease and knocked the Norwich netminder off his feet, setting up Zollner for the opportunity to poke in his second goal of the game.
The clock would work against NEC though, as they only had 37 seconds to attempt a tying goal. The Norwich defense managed to clear the puck and attempted an empty-net shot, but time expired before the puck went in.
Kilar had a busy game in net as he faced 51 shots and recorded 47 saves. Norwich netminder Ty Reichenbach (Billings, Mont.) tallied 20 saves in the win to improve to 3-0-0.
Norwich will look to win head coach Mike McShane's 700th career game on Friday when it travels to Skidmore for a 7 p.m. game. The Thoroughbreds upset No. 2-ranked UMass Boston 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
