Men’s Hockey: Norwich adds 12 in 2017 recruiting class

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University head men's ice hockey coach Mike McShane announced that 12 newcomers will be joining the Cadets for the 2017-18 season on Wednesday.

The 12 newcomers will join 17 returners from last year's squad that went 27-1-3 and won the program's fourth NCAA Division III National Championship with a 4-1 win over Trinity College (Conn.) in Utica, N.Y.

#3 Matt Burchill

Burchill is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound defenseman from Marshfield, Mass. that is transferring to Norwich after spending one year at the Air Force Academy. He played in six games last year for the Falcons. Prior to playing at Air Force, he played junior for the Wenatchee Wild of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and the South Shore Kings of the United States Premier Hockey League. He scored three goals and notched eight assists for 11 points in 45 games played in 2015-16.  

#6 Connor Swystun

Swystun is a 5-foot-10, 182-pound defenseman from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan that played four years for the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). He totaled 19 goals and 60 assists in 225 games played over four years. Last year he had a breakout season, scoring eight goals and dishing out 29 assists for 37 points in 56 games played to rank among the league leaders in points by a blue liner.   

#8 Felix Brassard

Brassard is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound forward from St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec that played for the Nepean Raiders of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) last season. He scored 21 goals and tallied 22 assists for 43 points in 63 games played.

#11 David Cyr

Cyr is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound defenseman from Brossard, Quebec that played for the Valleyfield Braves of the Quebec Junior Hockey League (LHJQ). He scored five goals and tallied 27 assists for 32 points in 57 games in 2015-16. He spent the fall semester at Norwich before returning to junior to play for the Topeka Roadrunners of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). He scored a goal and had four assists for five points in 25 games played.  

#18 Coby Downs

Downs is a 6-foot-0, 185-pound forward from Montclair, Calif. that played for the Battlefords North Stars of the SJHL in 2016-17. He ranked among the league leaders in points with 33 goals and 64 assists for 97 points in 57 games.  

#20 Michael Korol

Korol is a 6-foot, 187-pound forward from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan that played for the Humboldt Broncos of the SJHL with Swystun for the past three seasons. He scored 11 goals and tallied 14 assists for 25 points in 50 games last year.

#21 Ryan Boucher

Boucher is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound forward from Fitchburg, Mass. that played for the Cumberland Grads of the CCHL. In 25 games, he scored five goals and tallied two assists for seven points.

#24 Carter Cowlthorp

Cowlthorp is a 5-foot-8, 180-pound forward from Boissevain, Manitoba that played for the Virden Oil Caps of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) for the last three seasons. He scored 35 goals and tallied 44 assists for 79 points in 161 games played. Last season, he had a breakout year, scoring 26 goals and dishing out 28 assists for 54 points in 64 games played.

#25 Jordan Hall

Hall is a 6-foot, 200-pound forward from Anchorage, Alaska that transferred in to Norwich after spending his freshman year at the University of Southern Maine. In 14 games, he scored four goals and had three assists for seven points in 2016-17. Prior to USM, he played for the South Shore Kings of the USPHL Premier League.

#27 Scott Swanson

Swanson is a 5-foot-8, 170-pound forward from Wheaton, Illinois that played for the Springfield Pics of the USPHL the last two seasons. He scored 21 goals and had 22 assists for 43 points in 81 career games played with Springfield.

#30 Jordan Greenfield

Greenfield is a 6-foot-4, 195-pound goaltender from Edmonton, Alberta that played for the Springfield Blues of the NAHL and the Notre Dame Hounds of the SJHL last season. He played in 33 games, posting a 2.83 goals against average and a .917 save percentage between the two clubs.

#44 Kale Kane

Kane is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound forward from Kahnawake, Quebec that played for the Chilliwack Chiefs of the BCHL the last two seasons. Kane scored 38 goals and notched 61 assists for 99 points in 120 games played with the Chiefs.

Norwich opens the 2017-18 season hosting a pair of preseason exhibitions on Saturday, Oct. 21 vs. Nichols and Sunday, Oct. 22 vs. Saint Anselm at Kreitzberg Arena.

The Cadets open the regular season on Friday, Oct. 27 when they host Salve Regina at 7 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena. Prior to the Salve Regina game there will be a pre-game ceremony honoring last year's national championship team and the 2017 championship banner will officially be raised to the rafters.
