Men's Lacrosse: Norwich Blasts Green Mountain, 16-5
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Michael White and Jesse Mattson each scored three goals apiece, and seven other Cadets tallied markers as the Norwich University men’s lacrosse team ran past Green Mountain College, 16-5, Thursday afternoon at Howard Field.
Justin Pearson, Tyler Nicoll and Garrett Shufelt each netted two goals apiece for the Cadets, who have won two straight games and improve to 5-3 on the season. Tyler Woods, Kyle Marzeoti and Joe Galante each posted one goal and two assists for Norwich, while Patrick Sikora added a goal. Justin Medina and White also added assists to round out the scoring for the Cadets.
Max Talsky paced Green Mountain (0-4) with three goals. Matt Tarricone added one goal and two assists for the Eagles, while Eric Hansel chipped in one goal.
Norwich stormed out of the gates, scoring the first 12 goals of the contest and leading 12-1 at halftime. Mattson tallied all three of his markers in the first quarter as the Cadets built a 6-0 advantage after 15 minutes of action. White and Pearson both scored twice in the second quarter as Norwich added six more goals to open up a commanding 12-0 lead with 5:13 to play in the first half.
Green Mountain broke up the shutout bid with 1:14 to play in the stanza when Hansel scored on a nifty behind-the-back shot from close range.
Norwich was 4-for-4 on man-up opportunities in the first half. The Cadets thoroughly dominated the opening 30 minutes of play, outshooting the Eagles 26-4 and winning 10-of-15 faceoffs.
Both teams added four goals apiece in the second half to account for the final margin. Shufelt potted both of his markers within a 59-second span midway through the fourth quarter. Talsky also scored twice in the final stanza, including the game’s final goal with 3:20 to play.
Norwich emptied its bench in the second half, and everyone who was in uniform for the game saw significant playing time.
Norwich outshot Green Mountain 39-20 in the game, and the Cadets held a 66-26 edge in ground balls. NU finished the game 5-for-6 on man-up chances, while GMC was 0-for-4. Norwich won 16-of-25 faceoffs.
NU goaltender Caleb Fournier made eight saves for the Cadets in a little more than 41 minutes. He came on in relief of Nathan Proctor, who made one save in nearly 19 minutes of action. Green Mountain goalie Keith Drinkwine made nine stops for the Eagles in 60 minutes.
Norwich will resume its Pilgrim League schedule on Saturday, April 10, when the Cadets travel to Buzzards Bay, Mass., to compete against conference rival Massachusetts Maritime. The opening faceoff for the pivotal league tilt is slated for 1 p.m.
