Men's Lacrosse: Wheaton Cruises Past Norwich, 18-10
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Billy McNamara scored a game-high five goals and dished out three assists, and Chris Landers tallied four goals as the Wheaton College men’s lacrosse team secured an 18-10 victory over Norwich University in Pilgrim League action Saturday afternoon at sun-splashed Howard Field.
Ben Cederberg added one goal and a game-high four assists for the Lyons, who scored the game’s first 11 goals and never looked back en route to the easy win. David Schroeder and Warren Garceau each tallied two goals for Wheaton, while Drew Schaffer, Bobby Barry, Corey Best and Hudson Hackett all scored one goal apiece. Will Compton, Sean Doherty and Duncan Smith were each credited with one assist to round out the scoring for the Lyons (7-7, 5-2 Pilgrim).
Joe Galante scored four goals and added one assist to lead Norwich (8-8, 1-6 Pilgrim). Kyle Marzeoti and Jesse Matton each chipped in one goal and one assist for the Cadets, who ended the season on a five-game losing streak. Michael White, Tyler Nicoll, Patrick Sikora and Arron Canarelli all tallied one marker and Justin Pearson posted one assist to cap the scoring for Norwich.
McNamara scored four times in the first quarter, including a pair of markers in the final 13 seconds of the stanza, to help Wheaton establish a commanding 8-0 lead following the opening period. Chris Landers scored three goals in the quarter as the Lyons completed dominated the opening 15 minutes of play. Wheaton won 6-of-8 faceoffs in the quarter, while outshooting Norwich by a 20-3 margin.
Goals by Cederberg, Landers and Barry within the first five minutes of the second quarter gave the Lyons a comfortable 11-0 cushion, before Norwich finally got on the scoreboard as Sikora scored with 9:58 to play in the half. Mattson, Nicoll and Galante all registered goals in the final 9:22 of the frame to pull to the Cadets to within 13-4 at halftime.
The teams alternated goals in the third quarter, and Wheaton led 17-7 following the stanza. Galante netted a pair of tallies during the frame to complete his hat trick, while Schroeder scored twice for Wheaton.
Norwich actually outscored Wheaton, 3-1, in the fourth quarter as Galante, Canarelli and White all potted goals for the Cadets.
Wheaton outshot Norwich 45-35 in the game, and the Lyons enjoyed a 47-40 edge in ground balls. Wheaton won 16-of-31 faceoffs in the game, with Garceau going 11-of-19 in the “X”. Marzeoti, Norwich’s top faceoff specialist, won 9-of-14 faceoffs for the Cadets.
Schuyler Horn (7-7) stopped 11 shots in the Wheaton cage to pick up the victory between the pipes for the Lyons. NU goalie Nathan Proctor (5-7) turned aside 13 shots and scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls in the Cadets’ net.
Norwich’s eight victories this season are the most in for the program since the 2002 squad went 8-7.
