Men’s Lacrosse: Cadets drop league thriller
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – A three-goal run in the final quarter proved to the difference for Anna Maria in an 8-7 Great Northeast Athletic Conference win over Norwich University April 18.
Holding a 7-5 edge after three periods, the host Cadets (8-5, 6-2 GNAC) appeared on their way to an eighth straight win. However, the visiting AMCATS (8-8, 5-3) used a stout defense to keep the Maroon and Gold away from their net and produced three offensive strikes, including the eventual game-winner from senior defender Brad Peterson with less four minutes remaining, to take an 8-7 lead.
Norwich attempted several assaults on the AMC defense in the final moments including a man-up edge with 55 seconds left. However, a pair of good opportunities off the stick of freshman attacker Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) was missed which included a sparkling save from junior goalkeeper Andrew Ellis with 24 seconds left. Sophomore midfielder William Flanagan (Oxford, N.Y.) had one more try for the game-tying goal in the final 10 seconds, but it went wide of the net.
The Cadets opened a quick 1-0 lead when junior faceoff specialist/midfielder Nate Fortezzo (Branford, Conn.) won the opening faceoff and split the AMCATS defense for a goal 23 seconds in. Anna Maria responded by tallying four of the next five scores to hold a 4-2 lead after one. NU took advantage of a pair of man-up opportunities to register a three-goal run of its own to lead 5-4 at the break.
Fortezzo and sophomore midfielder Zach MacMillan (Brunswick, Maine) each ended with two goals to lead the offense. Sophomore attacker Ian Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) added a goal and two assists for a three-point game. NU held a 32-22 shots advantage, while the defense forced four turnovers and picked up 13 ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Austin Coleman (Vista, Calif.) turned in eight saves in his second start.
Anna Maria’s offense was lifted by senior attacker Mike Saulnier’s four goals. Ellis ended the game with eight saves.
The Cadets continue GNAC play with a critical late-season test against Mount Ida Saturday, April 21. Game time for Senior Day 2012 is 3 p.m. at Howard Field.
