NORTH DARTMOUTH, MASS. – A trio of underclassmen helped highlight Norwich University’s season opener March 3.
Sophomore midfielders Patrick Tommins (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, Md.) joined freshman attacker Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) to combine for the Cadets’ four goals in a 12-4 non-conference loss to Little East Conference member UMass-Dartmouth.
The host Corsairs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one quarter but had to fend off several challenges from the Maroon and Gold in the second and third quarters to lead 7-3 into the final stanza. A five-goal fourth quarter binge by the home side put the game out of reach.
Tommins posted two goals in five shot-on-goal attempts and added an assist and four ground balls for a strong start to the 2012 campaign. Fuller and Mendoza chipped in the other two NU goals, while senior midfielder Patrick Sikora (Montpeiler, Vt.) dished out two assists. Junior midfielder/faceoff specialist Nate Fortezzo (Branford, Conn.) was eight-of-15 in faceoffs, and freshman midfielder/faceoff specialist Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.) was a solid three-for-four in the same department.
Norwich resumes its non-conference slate Wednesday, March 7, with a 6 p.m. faceoff at Clarkson College in New York.
