Men's Rugby: Norwich Falls To Coast Guard, 32-0

Aug 25, 2007

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich men's rugby team kicked off its preseason schedule on Saturday, dropping a 32-0 decision to visiting Coast Guard. With a strong wind at its back, Coast Guard implemented a kicking strategy in the first half and opened up a 10-0 halftime edge. Coast Guard continued to pile on the points in the second half, en route to the victory.

The Norwich defense stood strong for most of the half as fullback Matt Burke fielded many high kicks with great confidence. Freshman hooker Ryan Wunder's throws-ins on the lineouts were crisp and direct, which resulted in effective lineout play. However, Coast Guard took advantage of field position and punched over two unconverted tries.

In the second half the wind let up but the heat did not, as temperatures inched into the 90s, with high humidity. Coast Guard recognized Norwich's inexperience at backline, switched tactics and attacked with ball in hand, putting over four more tries.

Coast Guard coach Jim O' Meara said he was impressed with Norwich's first fifteen's stamina in the heat. "I needed all seven replacements in the second half," he said.

"Since it is part of our preseason preparation, I chose to use this match to condition our boys and keep the second fifteen fresh for their match," said Norwich head coach Bob Weggler.

Newly elected team captain scrumhalf Todd Howe, with some outstanding passes, did well leading his team under the adverse conditions. After graduating 25 seniors and one week of practice, the Norwich ruggers have bonded well in a short time.

"The Wick's team effort throughout the week of preseason has been stellar," said Weggler. "This match has provided a platform of development that Norwich will learn from." He added that four year senior center Ryan Molina had some excellent runs and that he will be an asset as the season progresses.

The B-side also received valuable experience, some playing rugby for the first time. They lost to Coast Guard, 20-0.

The Norwich men's rugby team continues its preseason schedule with the annual Labor Day scrimmage match with Bishop University at 1 p.m. on the Norwich University pitch.
