Men's Rugby: Norwich Beats Northeastern, 10-9, To Earn Win As Varsity Team

BOSTON - The Norwich University men's rugby team traveled to Parson Field at Northeastern for its regular season opener, and the Cadets scored a come-from-behind 10-9 victory. The win was a historic one for NU, as it was its first victory as a varsity program.
The Cadets' strong defense and forward play dominated throughout the first half, but it was Northeastern that took a 3-0 lead into halftime. Northeastern added to its lead with another penalty bringing the score to 6-0. The Cadets got on the scoreboard with a try from junior winger George Rouson to pull them to within 6-5.
Northeastern increased its lead to 9-5 later in the half on another penalty kick.
The Cadets took their first lead with seven minutes remaining when senior scrumhalf John Lupo dove over for the try. Norwich was able to hold on for the victory.
"This is an historic win for the Cadets," said NU head coach Bob Weggler. "To win our first-ever varsity match is such a tremendous accomplishment for this team. The boys played the full 80 minutes. They never lost sight of their ultimate goal, to win with integrity."
