NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's rugby team hosted in-state foe St. Michaels in Rugby Northeast action on Saturday afternoon.
The Cadets came away with a convincing 70-8 victory over the Purple Knights as senior scrumhalf Tom St. Pierre (Warwick, R.I.) scored four tries on the day and sophomore flanker Nate Rolling (Taylosville, Utah) and junior wing Yao Dyson (Bristow, Va.) added two tries.
Rolling got the scoring started just over two minutes in with a try and St. Pierre added his first of the day just three minutes later. A conversion by senior flyhalf Keegan Frick (Thornton, Pa.) made it 12-0 Cadets.
Saint Michael's scored on a penalty kick to cut the lead to 12-3 at the 12-minute mark before Frick added a PK of his own 18 minutes in to make it 15-3.
Dyson then scored a try at the 20-minute mark that was converted by Frick for a 22-3 lead before junior center Joshua Johnson (Argyle, Texas) punched in a try (converted by Frick) at 32 minutes for a 29-3 lead. Dyson collected his second try (converted by Frick) at the 39-minute mark for a 36-3 NU halftime lead.
St. Pierre scored three tries in the second half as well as a try each from Rolling, senior lock Ryan Wagner (Newtown, Conn.) and senior center Alejandro Galea (Bath, Maine). Saint Michael's scored their lone try in extra time of the second half for a 70-8 final.
Norwich is next in action on Saturday, October 7th, hosting UMass Lowell in Rugby Northeast action. That match is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Dog River Rugby Pitch.
