Men’s Soccer: Cadets fall 3-0 to Brandeis in ECAC Semifinals
WALTHAM, Mass. – The Norwich men's soccer team pulled its fair share of upsets during the 2011 season. However, the Cadets drama-filled postseason run finally came to an end with a 3-0 loss to No. 1-seeded Brandeis in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Tournament Semifinals.
Brandeis senior Luke Teece scored a goal and added an assist on Tyler Savonen's eventual game-winning goal to pace the Judges' offense. Savonen scored on a header in the 36th minute to give Brandeis a 1-0 lead that the Judges would never relinquish.
Sam Ocel scored just 21 seconds into the second half and then Teece added an insurance marker in the 86th minute to cap the scoring for the Judges who are the defending tournament champions and came into Saturday's match as the No. 7-ranked team in New England.
Brandeis outshot Norwich 27-5 and had eight shots on net to the Cadets' two. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Toomey (Anchorage, Alaska) made five saves for Norwich.
Norwich concludes the 2011 campaign with a 12-10 record that saw the Cadets reach the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship game for the first time since 2008 and make its first appearance in the ECAC Tournament semifinals since 2007.
Ryan Robertson (Northfield, Vt.) was the lone senior on NU head coach Kyle Dezotell's squad. Dezotell has now compiled an 82-38-7 record in his six years at the helm of the program. He'll enter the 2012 season just seven wins shy of the school's all-time record for coaching wins.
