OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Norwich University men's soccer team opened its 2016 season with a 1-0 loss to SUNY New Paltz at the Oswego State Tournament on Friday evening.
New Paltz (1-0, 0-0 SUNYAC) scored the lone goal of the game in the 21st minute when Arthur Angst scored off a corner kick service from Charlie Versen.
The shots nearly dead even in the game with New Paltz just barely edging Norwich 9-8.
Norwich (0-1, 0-0 GNAC) sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Fitzpatrick (Milbury, Mass.) made his first collegiate start, stopping five shots for the Cadets. Sophomore Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) registered two shots on goal, while freshman Ronaldo Powell (Nantucket, Mass.) and junior Colin Lozito (Wilmington, Vt.) had a shot on goal to account for the Cadets' offense.
The Cadets will look for their first of 2016 today when they play host Oswego State at 3:30 p.m. The Lakers are coached by former NU head coach Bob Friskie and are coming off a 2-1 win in their season opener vs. SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
