OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Norwich University men's soccer team got a pair of goals from senior forward Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) to lead the Cadets to a 3-2 win over the host Lakers at the Oswego State Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Zimmerman scored less than nine minutes apart in the first half to stake the Cadets (1-1) to an early 2-0 lead. He notched Norwich's first goal of the 2016 season in the 14th minute off an assist from Alec Brigante (Colchester, Vt.). Brigante found Zimmerman with a pass from the right corner that Zimmerman buried into the left corner of the net to give the Cadets the early advantage.
He added to the lead in the 23rd minute with his second goal of the game and the 41st of his illustrious career off an assist from Ronaldo Powell (Nantucket, Mass.).
Oswego State (1-1) answered quickly as Mitch Brickman scored on a free kick less than two minutes later to halve the deficit.
Norwich regained the two-goal lead in the 52nd minute with Matt Hilton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scoring off a rebound that the Oswego State goalie couldn't corral for the eventual game-winning goal. The goal was also the first of Hilton's collegiate career.
Oswego State answered again in the 81st minute with Thomas Osborn scoring off an assist from Brickman. However, that's as close as the Lakers would get as Norwich held on for the victory to even its record on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Fitzpatrick (Milbury, Mass.) made six saves to pick up his first collegiate victory in goal for the Cadets. Oswego State outshot Norwich 20-6.
The win also marked the first of head coach Adam Pfeifer's career and it came against former NU head men's soccer coach Bob Friskie.
Zimmerman was named to the All-Tournament team.
Norwich continues its five-game road trip to open the season on Wednesday, Sept. 7 when it travels to Middlebury for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference matchup.
