NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Plattsburgh State spoiled the Norwich University men's soccer team's home opener with a 3-0 win on Wednesday night in non-conference action on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Plattsburgh (6-0-0, 0-0-0 SUNYAC) scored just 6:45 into the game with Jah-Heem Lawitz heading home a tic-tac-toe setup off a corner kick. Ian Spear and Max Delavalle picked up the assists after Spear found Delavalle at the top of the 18 with a quick corner kick. Delavalle served the ball to the left side of the net and Lawitz was the first with a head on it, beating NU goalkeeper Ryan Fitzpatrick (Milbury, Mass.) over his head.
The Cardinals added two late insurance goals in the final 15 minutes with Alex Price scoring an unassisted goal and Nicholas Laurent capping the scoring in the 83rd minute off an assist from Chris Bowden.
Price capitalized on a tough NU turnover where a defender tripped over the ball and then he walked in alone from the right side. Price beat Fitzpatrick to the right corner of the net to make it 2-0 Cardinals in the 76th minute.
Laurent finished off a shot by Chris Bowden by tapping the ball into a wide open net from inside the six-yard box to make it 3-0 Plattsburgh.
Plattsburgh outshot Norwich 15-9 in the game. Andrew LaClaustra improved to 6-0-0 on the year turning aside both shots he faced for Plattsburgh. Fitzpatrick made five saves for Norwich to fall to 1-3-0 on the year.
Norwich (2-3-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) will look to get back on track when it faces three-time defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champion Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 7 p.m. in a crucial early league showdown.
