Men's Soccer: Norwich battles Johnson & Wales to 1-1 stalemate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University men's soccer team battled Johnson & Wales University to a 1-1 tie in a rematch of last year's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament semifinal. 

Norwich (3-3-4, 2-0-3 GNAC) tied for the third straight match and fourth time in the last five games. Junior center back Matt Mazzola (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored his second goal of the year in the ninth minute off a scrum in front of the net. He is now tied for the team lead in goals with three other players.

Mazzola's tally leveled the score after Johnson & Wales (8-1-1, 3-1-1 GNAC) scored in the fourth minute with a goal by Andrew Vecere off an assist from Erik Schneider. 

Junior goalkeeper Brendan Germano (Monroe Township, N.J.) capped off the week with another impressive goaltending performance, making nine saves over the 110-minute game.  

Norwich was outshot 28-7 and the Wildcats had 10 corner kicks to NU's four. The Cadets also broke a string of three straight losses playing at Johnson & Wales, including two postseason playoff exits in 2014 and 2015. 

Norwich extended its unbeatean streak against GNAC opponents to 17 straight games, including playoffs with the tie. The Cadets travel to Plymouth State on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference matchup with the Panthers.
