NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team continued its recent offensive hot streak, downing Lasell College 7-0 on Wednesday night on a rainy Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Senior Camilo Estrada (Pawtucket, R.I) notched three assists, while the Cadets (6-3-4, 4-0-3 GNAC) six different goal scorers in the victory. NU extended its unbeaten streak vs. league opponents to 19 straight games with the win. The Cadets are 12-0-7 in their last 19 games vs. GNAC opponents.
Sophomore Carlos Guerra (Mission, Texas) had two goals to lead the Norwich offense, while Jeff Purdy (Gorham, N.H.), Luke Gleadle (Gilbert, Ariz.), Ivan Bansah (Montpelier, Vt.), Ransford Ahenkora (Bronx, N.Y.) and Staige Davis (Shelburne, Vt.) each scored a goal as well in Norwich's highest offensive output of the season.
Purdy opened the scoring in the ninth minute, scoring off an assist from Estrada. Norwich used a 2-on-1 out of the corner off a corner kick and Estrada came in from the right unmarked before serving the ball over to Purdy at the far post who side-volleyed the ball into the left corner of the net to make it 1-0 Cadets.
Davis increased the lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute with a goal off an assist from Gleadle. Gleadle dropped a pass back towards the top of the penalty box from the right side and Gleadle ran onto it before slipping it into the left corner of the net for his third goal of the season.
Guerra scored his first of the night in the 35th minute to make it 3-0 when he took a pass from Estrada off a corner kick and buried the ball into the left side of the net for his third goal of the year.
Norwich kept the pressure on in the second half, scoring four more goals with Gleadle starting it in the 65th minute with a pretty header off an Estrada corner kick service for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Guerra scored his second of the game when he chipped the goalkeeper from the top of the penalty box off an assist from Chris Clain (Proctor, Vt.) in the 78th minute.
Ivan Bansah (Montpelier, Vt.) scored his first collegiate goal in the 81st minute off a pretty tic-tac-toe passing setup from Alessandro Delia (Charlotte, Vt.) and Nick Tantillo (Tolland, Conn.). Bansah took a pass from Tantillo at the far post and tapped the ball into the goal on the left side.
Ransford Ahenkora (Bronx, N.Y.) capped the scoring in the 88th minute with his first goal of the season off an assist from Delia for his second helper on the night.
Norwich outshot Lasell 25-17 for the game. Germano made five saves to pick up the victory and shared the team shutout with Ryan Fitzpatrick (Millbury, Mass.) getting his first game action of the season.
Norwich travels to Suffolk on Saturday for a 4 p.m. GNAC contest vs. the Rams.
