Men's Swimming & Diving: NU Places Third At New England Championships

BRISTOL, R.I. - Ben Courtney won two races, and placed third in another, and Chris Prybella and Joe Moeller each captured individual events as well to lead the Norwich men's swimming and diving team to a third-place finish at the New England Championships last weekend.

The Cadets amassed 311 points to place third behind Bentley and Keene State, who placed first and second, respectively.

Courtney, who was named the "Senior High-Point Swimmer" for most points accumulated over four years, won both the 50- and 100-yard backstroke events, while also placing third in the 200-yard backstroke discipline. Courtney clocked a time of 24.99 seconds in winning the 50-yard backstroke. He touched the wall in 53.16 in taking home the first-place ribbon in the 100-yard backstroke, and the finished in 1:58.19 in taking third in the 200-yard backstroke. Courtney established new Norwich records in all three events.

Prybella stole the show in the freestyle events, winning one and placing runner-up in the other two. He won the 200-yard freestyle with a clocking of 1:44.23, while also placing second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.85) and 100-yard freestyle (47.36). Prybella set a new Norwich record in the 50-yard freestyle during the preliminaries when he clocked a time of 21.60. His time of 47.36 in the 100-yard event also broke the NU record.

Moeller, meanwhile, won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:59.14. He also took second place in the 400-yard individual medley with a clocking of 4:19.71. Moeller broke Norwich records in both events.

Norwich also set school records in the 400-yard relay and the 800-yard relay. NU's foursome of Peter Bue, Courtney, Kyle Kenia and Prybella set the mark in the 400-yard event with a clocking of 3:13.43. Courtney, Kenia, Moeller and Prybella teamed up to break the record in the 800-yard discipline with a time of 7:16.13.

Courtney, Bue, Kenia, Prybella, Moeller and Renat Fatkulin were all named "All-New England" after finishing in the Top 6 individually and/or Top 3 in a relay.
