Tennis: Norwich Cruises Past Green Mountain College, 8-1

Apr 14, 2008

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University tennis team won its third consecutive match on Monday afternoon, coasting past in-state rival Green Mountain College, 8-1, at Shapiro Field House.

The Cadets (5-2) captured all three doubles matches, and then won five of the six singles contests en route to the victory.

Peter Hooper, Norwich's No. 1 singles player, got his biggest test of the season as the junior from Spartanburg, S.C., needed a second set tiebreaker to hold off Nico Bourges, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

"Peter had his toughest test of the year thus far," said NU head coach Kyle Dezotell. "He played a flawless first set, but really had to dig in and concentrate in the second as his opponent got stronger and stronger as the match went on."

Matt Sanford won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, defeating Rob Leeds, 6-4, 6-3. Chris Pashley defeated Shane Bufano, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 singles, while Travis Tyler took a 6-1, 6-1 decision from Kyle O'Boyle at No. 4 singles.

Pashley and Tyler teamed up to defeat Bufano and O'Boyle, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles, and their play impressed Dezotell.

"Chris Pashley and Travis Tyler were very consistent and solid in both doubles and singles," added Dezotell. "When they are on their games, they are capable of beating any opponent."

Katie Brammer rounded out NU's list of winners in singles action, as she downed Kevin Hare, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.

Hooper and Sanford were victorious over Bourges and Leeds, 9-7, in an exciting, back and forth match at No. 1 doubles. Meanwhile, Brammer and Garrett Washburn were 8-1winners over Mark Lundeen and Christin Lourac at No. 3 doubles.

"Today was a good performance," said Dezotell. "Including today, we have five matches in eight days, so hopefully today's outcome will help propel us forward to a few more wins."

Norwich returns to action on Thursday, April 17, when the Cadets host in-state rival Lyndon State at Shapiro Field House.

Notes: Norwich improves to 4-0 versus other Vermont schools ... the Cadets are 2-0 versus Castleton State, 1-0 versus Johnson State and 1-0 versus Green Mountain College ... Peter Hooper improves his overall record at No. 1 singles to 7-0 this season ... he and Sanford have authored a 6-1 mark at No. 1 doubles.
