NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Even after having 18-day layoff since its last match, the Norwich men's tennis team showed no signs of rust as it rolled to a 9-0 win over Lyndon State on Wednesday afternoon at Shapiro Fieldhouse in non-league action.
The Cadets (2-0, 0-0 GNAC) swept all three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead before singles play even started.
Seniors Collin Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) and Zach Reichelt (Manchester, Conn.) teamed up to take first doubles 8-1 against Lyndon State's Mike Howard and John Corey. Hyte also beat Howard 6-1 and 6-3 to win first singles and improve to 2-0 in both singles and doubles matches on the season. Reichelt beat Daniel Weiner 6-1, 6-1 at fourth singles as well.
Sophomore Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) and freshman Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.) combined to take second doubles by a score of 8-1 over Lyndon State's Tyler Schofield and Weiner. Hoskey also beat Schofield 6-1, 6-0 at second singles. Grindle downed Corey at third singles by the same scores 6-1, 6-0.
The foursome of Hyte, Reichelt, Hoskey and Grindle all stayed perfect on the season with their victories.
Freshman Patrick Ogden (Mobile, Ala.) swept Jenness 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles and senior Anthony Verno (Williamson, N.Y.) defeated Sean MacKay 6-0, 6-2 at sixth singles to complete the 9-0 sweep for Norwich.
Norwich returns to the court on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Albertus Magnus to open up Great Northeast Athletic Conference play at 1 p.m. The Cadets swept Albertus Magnus 9-0 last season in their lone meeting.
