Softball: Norwich And Penn State-Beavers Split Doubleheader

Mar 13, 2008

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Marley Balasco went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in, and Lindsey Fickett went 2-for-2 with three RBIs to help the Norwich University softball team defeat Penn State-Beavers, 12-3, in six innings in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday. Penn State-Beavers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the nightcap, 5-4.

With the split, the Cadets' record moves to 3-3 on the young season.

Freshman Mackenzie Pratt pitched five innings to pick up the victory for the Cadets in game one. The first-year pitcher gave up just four hits, while striking out two and walking two.

Fickett produced a run-scoring single in the first inning to put Norwich on top, 1-0. Penn State-Beavers jumped in front, 3-1, following a three-run second inning. The Cadets tied it at 3-3 in the third inning on Fickett's two-run single.

Norwich broke the tight game open with seven runs in the fourth inning. The rally started when Kerri Ingraham walked and Jazmin Stevens reached on an error. Codi Collins then singled to load the bases, and Balasco ripped a two-run single to right-center field to plate Ingraham and Stevens. After a passed ball scored Collins from third base, Lindsay Carey hit an RBI single. Tiana Garaboldi added a two-run double, and Carroll scored Garaboldi with a double of her own.

Balasco added a two-run single in the sixth inning, and that effectively ended the contest due to the Mercy Rule.

Penn State-Beavers jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead in game two. Norwich battled back with two runs in the second inning on a triple by Carroll. The Cadets tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth inning on Stevens' RBI single.

NU took its first lead of the game in the sixth inning as Grennon led off with a double, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a groundout to third.

The Cadets were three defensive outs away from a sweep of the doubleheader, but Penn State-Beavers plated two runs in the seventh to secure the victory.

Norwich returns to action on Friday, March 14, when the Cadets play a doubleheader versus Marywood.
