STANDISH, Maine -The Norwich University softball team was swept by St. Joseph's (Maine) in a GNAC doubleheader on Sunday, losing the first game, 11-3 (five innings), and falling in the night cap, 17-9 (6 innings).
The Cadets end their 2008 season with a final record of 17-17 (13-13 GNAC). The Monks, meanwhile, improve to 22-12 (17-7 GNAC).
Norwich actually led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the third inning in the opener, but St. Joseph's (Maine) struck for two runs in that frame, and blew the game open with one run in the fourth and six more in the fifth.
Jazmin Stevens and Marley Balasco paced the Cadets' offense in the first game, as each hitter collected two hits apiece.
In game two, St. Joseph's (Maine) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Norwich came back with four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-3 advantage. The Monks scored four times in the second and six more times in the third to open a 13-5 lead going into the fourth inning. NU got four runs back in the top of the fourth inning, but that was as close as the Cadets would get, as the Monks tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the sixth to close out the scoring.
