Softball: Three Cadets Selected To The All-GNAC Team
NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Three members of the Norwich University softball team were recognized by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on Friday as Whitney Grennon, Jackie Donahue and Lindsay Carey were named to the all-conference team.
Grennon and Donahue were both tabbed to the league's second team, while Carey earned a spot on the conference's third unit.
Grennon, a junior infielder from Franklin, Vt., started all 35 games for the Cadets this spring. She hit .368 with a team-best nine home runs, 39 runs batted in, 40 runs scored and 83 total bases. Grennon also ranked among the team leaders in hits (42), doubles (eight), triples (two) and walks (11). It marks the second straight season that Grennon has earned All-GNAC accolades after being named to the second team as a sophomore last year. She was also placed on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team this season.
A native of Northfield, Vt., Donahue had a "breakout" freshman campaign for the Cadets at third base, hitting .407 at the plate with eight home runs and eight doubles. She listed second on the team in runs batted in (37) and total bases (70), despite playing in just 27 of the team's 35 games.
Carey, meanwhile, earned all-league accolades for the first time in her career after hitting .397 and ripping a team-best 10 doubles as a sophomore. The second baseman, who hails from Colchester, Vt., also led the team with 48 hits, while listing among the team leaders in runs scored (32), runs batted in (33) and home runs (five).
Norwich compiled an 18-17 overall record in 2009, including a 15-9 mark in league games. The Cadets qualified for the GNAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed, but they were upset by eighth-seeded Simmons, 13-7, in the first round.
