Softball: Simmons Upends Norwich, 13-7

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Courteney Collier went 2-for-5 with a double and four runs batted in, and Ashley Wheeler was 3-for-5 with three RBIs to help lead eighth-seeded Simmons past fifth-seeded Norwich, 13-7, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament game Wednesday afternoon.

Lindsay Carey led the Norwich attack at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Seana Ellsworth had a big day offensively as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and one run scored.

Simmons (15-21) got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Norwich (18-17) got one run back in the bottom of the first when Carey blasted a solo homer.

The Sharks extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the third inning, but a two-run homer by Carey in the bottom of that frame made the score 4-3.

The Cadets took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning when Ellsworth ripped a three-run home run to give NU a 6-4 advantage.

Simmons tied the score at 6-6 with two runs in the fifth inning, and the Sharks blew the game wide open with seven runs in the sixth.

Norwich got one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning on Whitney Grennon's RBI double, but the Cadets could get no closer.
