Softball: Travers, Day tabbed to GNAC All-Conference squads

BOSTON – Sophomore Briana Day (Yelm, Wash.) and freshman Kelly Travers (Whitman, Mass.) of the Norwich University softball team picked up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) postseason honors on Monday as league officials announced the 2012 GNAC All-Conference selections.

Day was named First Team All-Conference at the designated player position while Travers was named Second Team All-Conference as a utility player.

Day earned postseason honors for the second straight season after compiling 17 hits (.321 average) in 53 at bats to go along with three home runs and 14 RBIs. Day played in just 18 games this season after missing the first half of the season while recovering from offseason surgery. She provided an instant boost to the Cadets' offense in the middle of the batting order.

Travers split time between outfield and shortstop in her inaugural season for the Maroon and Gold. She firmly entrenched herself in the No. 3 spot in the order and led the team in batting average (.372), hits (42), triples (three), home runs (seven), RBIs (23), total bases (76) and slugging percentage (.673).

Sophomore catcher Abby Belcher (Winthrop, Mass.) was Norwich's representative on the GNAC Sportsmanship Team. Belcher tied Travers in hits (42) and RBIs (23) while posting a .339 batting average. She led the team with 27 runs scored while batting leadoff for the Cadets for much of the season.

Norwich concluded its 2012 campaign with the most wins since 2004 after posting a 21-16 record and finishing sixth in the GNAC Tournament.
