Women's Basketball: Norwich Defeats Plattsburgh State, 65-59, In Overtime

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Laural McWilliams scored a team-high 18 points, and Ally Daniels added 17 points and a team-best 10 rebounds as the Norwich women's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2007-08 campaign, defeating visiting Plattsburgh State in overtime, 65-59, on Saturday evening at Andrews Hall.
The Cadets, who improve to 1-7 on the young season, scored the final four points of regulation to force the extra session. Then, after falling behind by three in overtime, NU finished the extra period on an 11-2 spurt to secure the victory.
Erica Rate joined McWilliams and Daniels in double figures with 11 points. Natalie Marchese chipped in with eight points and a game-high 10 assists.
Norwich (1-7) jumped out to a 10-5 lead at the 16:01 mark. Plattsburgh State (2-5) responded with a 6-2 spurt to pull to within 12-11 with 13:55 to play before halftime. NU scored the next four points to reclaim a five-point lead at 16-11at the 10:51 mark. The Cardinals tied the score at 16-16 less than three minutes later, and the teams went back and forth, but the Cadets used an 8-2 spurt to end the half and take a 26-22 lead into the intermission.
NU opened the second half on a 6-0 run to assume its largest lead of the game at 32-22 just two minutes into the stanza. Plattsburgh came right back, utilizing a 18-6 burst to take a 40-38 lead midway through the second half. Norwich battled back, outscoring Plattsburgh State, 6-0 over the next three minutes to take a 44-40 lead with just under seven minutes to play.
Plattsburgh used a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to open up a 50-44 cushion with only 4:32 to play, but Norwich ended the period on a 10-4 spurt to force the overtime.
Katie Simpson led the Cardinals with a game-high 21 points, while Jacee Sutton netted 14 points and Casey Clark added 13 points.
NU shot a blistering 58.3 percent from the field in the second half. The Cadets held the Cardinals to 2-of-9 shooting in the overtime.
Norwich will break from action for the remainder of the month of December, and the Cadets will resume their 2007-08 campaign on Jan. 4-5, when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to compete in the King's College Tournament.
