Women's Basketball: Norwich Downs Simmons For Sixth Straight Win

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Christine Daniels scored a game-high 19 points and ripped down nine rebounds, and Erica Rate netted 16 points to lead the Norwich University women's basketball team to a 74-64 victory over GNAC rival Simmons in the team's season finale Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall.
Norwich concludes its regular season with a 10-3 GNAC record (11-13 overall), and the Cadets will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament. NU will begin its quest for the conference title on Tuesday, Feb. 26, when it hosts sixth-seeded St. Joseph's (Maine) in a quarterfinal matchup at Andrews Hall at 7 p.m.
Jess Jaggars notched her fourth double-double of the season for Norwich with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Ally Daniels added three points and 12 rebounds for the Cadets, who are riding a season-high six-game win streak into Tuesday's GNAC quarterfinal game.
Norwich led 34-29 at halftime, but the Cadets scored the first eight points of the second stanza to open up a 42-29 advantage at the 16:50 mark. Christine Daniels and Rate each scored four points apiece during the spurt, which gave the Cadets their largest lead of the game at that point.
After Simmons whittled Norwich's lead down to nine points at 49-40 with 13:01 to play, the Cadets reeled off a 12-2 run to take a 61-42 lead with 7:42 remaining. Jaggars ignited the burst with six points.
The Sharks got as close as nine points on two occasions down the stretch, but the Cadets were never seriously threatened.
The first half was a tightly-contested affair that Norwich led throughout. The Cadets built an eight point lead late in the stanza, but Simmons ended the frame on a 5-2 spurt to trim NU's halftime lead to 34-29.
Lauren Kreckie led Simmons (10-14, 6-7 GNAC) with a team-high 17 points. Morgan Johnson scored 16 points for the Sharks, while Stephanie Fox produced a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Simmons will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament, and the Sharks will match-up with defending league champion Emmanuel on Tuesday evening.
