Jan 26, 2008

BOSTON - Ally Daniels notched a double-double with a game-high 15 points and a game-best 12 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Norwich women's basketball team dropped a 60-49 decision at Suffolk in a GNAC contest played Saturday afternoon at Regan Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Cadets fall to 5-12 (4-2 GNAC). The Rams, meanwhile, improve to 10-5 (5-1 GNAC). Suffolk led 24-23 at halftime, but the Rams outscored Norwich, 36-26, in the second half en route to the 11-point victory.

With Suffolk trailing 27-26 just two minute into the second stanza, the Rams reeled off an 8-0 run to take a 34-27 lead at the 15:45 mark. A 7-2 spurt by the Cadets trimmed Suffolk's lead to 36-34 with 10:50 to play in the game. The Rams responded with a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to grab a 48-37 lead at the 7:39 mark, and the Cadets got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Suffolk jumped all over Norwich to start the game, taking a 13-4 lead at the 11:50 mark of the first half. Ten straight points by NU gave the Cadets their first lead of the game at 14-13 at the 6:02 mark. Norwich eventually opened up its largest lead of the game at 21-18 with 2:27 to play before intermission, but Suffolk closed the half on a 6-2 run to take a 24-23 lead into halftime.

Norwich got seven points from Kayleigh Shappy and Erica Rate, and six apiece from Karissa Doyon and Laural McWilliams.

Suffolk was led by Katie Castignetti and Kerry Bowman, who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Neither team shot particularly well from the field with Suffolk shooting 37.5 percent and Norwich shooting 35.8 percent. The Cadets held a slim 40-37 rebounding edge. NU committed 19 turnovers that resulted in 22 Suffolk points.

Norwich wraps up its two-game road swing on Thursday, Jan. 31, when the Cadets travel to back down to Boston, Mass., to battle defending GNAC champion Emmanuel. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
