Women's Basketball: Cadets Look To Build On Last Year's Success In 2007-08

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - After reeling off an impressive record of 24-4 and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in 2006-07, optimism is running high for the Norwich women's basketball team as it prepares to embark upon its 2007-08 campaign.
Norwich head coach Mark Miller, who led the Cadets to new heights last season in his first year in charge of the program, hopes that his team will be able to pick up where it left off last season.
With Kayleigh Shappy and Ally Daniels returning to the mix this season, the Cadets should be very strong at the guard position. Shappy, who is the team's leading returning scorer (9.6 ppg., in 2006-07), led the team with 43 three-point field goals a year ago. Daniels, meanwhile, averaged 3.7 ppg., and 2.4 rpg., as a freshman last season.
Sophomores Natalie Marchese (5.9 ppg., 1.9 rpg.) and Jess Jaggars (4.0 ppg., 3.6 rpg.) also return to the team this season, and hopefully each player will continue to mature and develop in the Norwich system. A long-range shooter, Marchese knocked down 16 three-pointers last season.
"While this year's team will be extremely strong at the guard position, we have to be able to rebound effectively in order to win," says Miller. "We lost our most dependable post players from last year, and we will have to compensate accordingly in order to achieve the same success that we did in 2006-07."
In order to fill some of the holes created by the loss of Monica Selander (10.7 ppg.), Sarah Chap (10.1 ppg., 8.4 rpg.) and Kristi Powlovich (8.2 ppg., 4.0 apg.), Miller has brought in a talented crop of freshmen, led by Christine Daniels (Ally's sister) and Karissa Doyan.
The Cadets lost to Emmanuel, 63-55, in the GNAC championship game last season, and NU will use that as motivation this year. In fact, two of Norwich's four losses last season came at the hands of the Saints.
The Cadets were extended an at-large invitation to play in the NCAA Tournament, despite not earning the league's automatic bid. NU accepted the offer and lost to Fitchburg State in the opening round. Although Norwich fell in that game, the experience gained by the players will help them as they begin the quest to return to the NCAAs this season.
Miller has put together a challenging schedule for the upcoming season. The Cadets open the home portion of its slate on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. when they tip off against Middlebury. On Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, NU will host the annual Hockenbury Tournament, which will feature St Lawrence, Bates College and The Apprentice School.
