Women's Basketball: Norwich Pulls Away From Suffolk, 67-52
NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Christine Daniels posted a double-double with a game-high 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Kayleigh Shappy netted 11 of her 14 points in the second half as the Norwich University women's basketball team defeated Suffolk, 67-52, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall.
Shappy knocked down a game-high four three-pointers en route to her season-high 14 points. Ally Daniels had a solid all-around game, chipping in nine points, five rebounds and a game-high six assists for the Cadets (12-4, 5-0 GNAC). Jess Jaggars added seven points and nine rebounds for NU, which has reeled off six straight victories.
Suffolk outscored Norwich 10-6 to start the game, but a 12-0 spurt by the Cadets, gave the hosts an 18-12 edge at the 12:05 mark. NU extended its lead to as many as eight points in the first half, before settling for a 29-22 advantage at the intermission.
Suffolk trimmed its deficit down to 35-32 at the 15:25 mark of the second half, but Norwich responded with a 10-2 spurt to build a 45-34 lead less than three minutes later. After a basket by the Rams made it 45-36, the Cadets ran off six unanswered points to open up a 51-36 edge. Suffolk cut it down to 12 points at 55-43 with 6:02 to play, but Norwich scored seven straight points to take a 62-43 lead with 4:26 to play.
Julianne Conrad and Meghan Tracey each scored 13 points apiece to lead Suffolk (8-8, 2-4 GNAC).
Norwich shot just 38.2 percent from the field, while Suffolk hit only 36.5 percent of its shots. The Cadets held a commanding 49-25 rebounding edge, including a 23-8 margin on the offensive glass. Both teams turned the ball over 19 times in the contest.
Norwich continues its season-long four-game homestand on Thursday, Jan. 29, when the Cadets host GNAC rival Emmanuel at Andrews Hall. Tip-off for the GNAC contest is slated for 5:30 p.m.
