Feb 4, 2008

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Freshman women's ice hockey player Sarah Scardino was named the ECAC "Rookie of the Week" on Monday after leading the Cadets to victories over MIT and Salve Regina last weekend.

A native of Stoughton, Mass., Scardino scored a goal and added an assist in both games, ending the weekend with a team-high four points.

The 5-1 forward assisted on Sophie Leclerc's game-winning goal against MIT, and added an insurance tally later in that contest as the Cadets topped the Engineers, 3-1.

Then, against Salve Regina, Scardino netted the game-winning goal midway through the second period as NU held on for a 3-2 win. Earlier in the game, Scardino set up Katie Leupp's goal that gave the Cadets a 2-0 first period lead.

For the season, Scardino ranks third on the team with 13 points and tied for second on the club with nine assists.

Norwich (8-6-2, 5-5-2 ECAC East) returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 5, when the Cadets host St. Michael's in an ECAC East contest. The game is part of the inaugural "Tribute to the Troops" night at Kreitzberg Arena. The evening's festivities, which are set to begin at 7 p.m., are all geared towards saying thank you to all of the Norwich alums that have served or are currently serving overseas.
