Women's Ice Hockey: Sarah Scardino Tabbed ECAC "Rookie Of The Week"

Feb 26, 2008

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - For the second time this season, Norwich University freshman women's ice hockey player Sarah Scardino was named the ECAC "Rookie of the Week." The first-year player earned the honor after helping to lead the Cadets to three victories last weekend.

Scardino scored three goals and added an assist for Norwich last week, as the Cadets secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming ECAC East Tournament. As one of the top four seeds, NU has earned home ice advantage in the quarterfinal round of the league playoffs.

A native of Stoughton, Mass., Scardino began her busy weekend by netting a goal in NU's 4-2 win over Castleton State on Friday night. Then, on Saturday afternoon, she scored a goal and added an assist as the Cadets skated past Plymouth State, 4-1. On Sunday, the forward scored her third goal of the weekend to help NU get past Salve Regina, 3-1, and earn the fourth seed in the tourney. NU entered Sunday's game just one point ahead of the Seahawks, so the victory was necessary in order to clinch a quarterfinal home game.

For the season, Scardino ranks tied for second on the team with 10 goals, while listing third on the squad with 11 assists and 21 points.

Freshman goaltender Cindy Fortin, who backstopped two of NU's wins last weekend, was honored by the ECAC as well, as the first-year goalie was selected to the league's "Honor Roll." Fortin began the weekend with a 17-save performance against Castleton State. The native of Quebec City, Que., really came up big on Sunday, though, stopping 42 of 43 shots to lead the Cadets to the crucial victory.

Fortin has been steady in goal for Norwich all season long, compiling an overall record of 10-9-2 to go along with a .917 save percentage and a 2.41 goals-against average.

Norwich finished its inaugural varsity campaign with a regular season record of 12-9-2 (9-8-2 ECAC East). The Cadets will look to add to that win total on Saturday, March 1, when they host Salve Regina in an ECAC East Tournament quarterfinal matchup at Kreitzberg Arena. The game, which serves as a rematch of NU's regular season finale, is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
