Feb 2, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Kelsey Cone posted a goal and an assist as Norwich posted a 3-1 victory over MIT in an ECAC East women's ice hockey game on Saturday afternoon. The Cadets improve to 7-6-2 overall and 4-5-2 in conference play, while the Engineers' record drops to 0-13-1 (0-12-1 ECAC East).

Cone quickly picked up her first point when she connected on a feed from Tara Mead after 1:41 had expired in the first period. Norwich doubled its advantage in the third minute when Sophie Leclerc redirected a pass from Sarah Scardino for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

MIT later found itself in a 5-on-3 power-play but it could not convert the opportunity. The Engineers cut their deficit in half at the 11:57 mark of the first period when Rachel Longley set up Catherine Harding for the goal. The Cadets' slim 2-1 edge would hold through the first intermission.

In the second stanza, Norwich maintained its offensive pressure as it out-shot MIT, 16-2. The Cadets capped the scoring halfway through the period when Cone found Hilary Davis for an insurance goal.

The Engineers had two chances to narrow the gap early in the final period, but were unable to push anything across.

Elisa LaRoche made 14 saves to earn her first career victory between the pipes for the Cadets.

Norwich outshot MIT, 40-15, for the game. Each team went 0-for-3 on the power play.

Norwich returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 3, when the Cadets travel to Newport, R.I., to take on ECAC East foe Salve Regina at 2 p.m.
