Jan 12, 2008

HENNIKER, N.H. - Sophie Leclerc and Kelsey Cone each scored in the final 5:27 of regulation time to lift the Norwich women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over New England College on Saturday afternoon. The Cadets, who have won two of their last three games, improve to 5-4-1 (2-3-1 ECAC East).

Leclerc tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal with 5:27 showing on the third period clock when the senior registered a power play goal off an assist from Sarah Scardino. Then, with just 1:30 to play, Cone netted an unassisted insurance goal.

Cindy Fortin was perfect between the pipes for the Cadets, stopping all 26 shots that she faced en route to her third shutout of the season. The freshman was called on make 12 saves in the third period as the Pilgrims picked up the intensity in the final stanza.

New England College (6-3-1, 4-2-1 ECAC East) actually outshot Norwich, 26-21, but the Pilgrims were unable to get anything past Fortin. Norwich was 1-for-5 on the power play, while New England College was 0-for-4.

NU returns to action on Friday, Jan. 18, when the Cadets host Manhattanville at Kreitzberg Arena. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
