Women's Ice Hockey: Norwich Makes Division I Debut With 4-1 Loss At Sacred Heart

Oct 27, 2007

BRIDGPORT, Conn. - The Norwich women's ice hockey team opened its inaugural varsity season by travelling to Division-I independent Sacred Heart for a game this prior to the Cadets home-opening game vs Castleton State on Nov. 9.

Despite managing a respectable 36 shots on goal against the Pioneers, the Cadets dropped the game 4-1 in a wide open, fast-paced contest that featured end-to-end offensive scoring chances for both teams.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring late in the first period only to see the Cadets tie the game midway through the second stanza on a Sophie Leclerc unassisted goal.

The Pioneers scored the next two goals in the second period to give them a 3-1 lead going into the third. The Cadets had several excellent scoring chances in the second period but could not beat the Pioneers' goaltender.  Sacred Heart added a late third period goal to round out the scoring.

NU freshmen goaltender Cindy Fortin was outstanding, stopping 45 of 49 shots in the loss.

Norwich head coach Mark Bolding was pleased with the overall effort by the team.

"We were able to take a lot of positives from this first game," said Bolding. "The goaltending of Fortin and the competitiveness that our players showed against a Div. I team was excellent."
