Women's Ice Hockey: Cadets Set To Open Inaugural Varsity Campaign

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - What an exciting time it is for ice hockey here at Norwich University. While most NU fans know about the success that the men's team has enjoyed over the years, many people may not know about the school's women's hockey program. Starting this year, though, people will have to take notice as the Cadets will be embarking upon their first season as a varsity team in 2007-08.
The Norwich women's hockey program, which has operated as a club team over the past several years, will be joining the varsity ranks this season as a member of the ECAC Women's East Hockey League.
Head coach Mark Bolding (Norwich '95) has taken his club team and transformed it into a very good first-year varsity program. Bolding, who starred on the men's hockey team during his days as a student here at Norwich, has the Cadets moving in the right direction as they begin playing a varsity schedule.
"The league that we are entering into is very good with a host of teams that play at a very high level of competition," says Bolding. "We have a challenging schedule ahead of us, and we know it won't be easy."
Interest in playing women's ice hockey has always been vibrant, and this year is no exception as the team has over 30 players trying out. Among those vying for a spot on this season's roster are several key players from last year's club team.
Junior Sophie LeClerc, sophomore Anne DiVito, senior Amanda Gage, sophomore Katie Leupp and senior Hillary Davis are just a few of the key returnees, who will help Bolding and the Cadets make 2007-08 a very memorable first varsity campaign.
Bolding has bolstered his roster with several talented freshmen, including forward Sarah Scadino and defenseman Kelsey Cone.
"I am excited about the direction of our program," says Bolding. "This is going to be a fun season for us as we get our feet wet as a varsity team. There will certainly be challenges in store for us, but I feel that this group of young women will rise to them and compete hard all season long."
The team will open its first season of varsity action with a contest versus Castleton State in their home opener on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m.
