BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team closed the first semester with a 3-1 victory over Bowdoin College on Saturday night in non-conference action at Watson Arena.
The Cadets (8-1-1, 6-0-0 NEHC) handed Bowdoin (4-1-2) its first loss of the 2016-17 season behind Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) and Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) each tallying a goal and an assist.
After a scoreless first period, Bowdoin struck first at the 3:47 mark of the middle stanza, capitalizing on a power play opportunity with a goal by Brooke Solomon.
Norwich responded less than a minute later though with a power play goal of its own when freshman Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) lit the lamp for the fourth time this season off assists from Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland and Labrador) and Maddie Tasha (North Falmouth, Mass.).
Norwich took its first lead of the game at the 12:27 mark of the second period with another power play goal, this time from Rossini to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.) tallied her team and NCAA Division III defenseman-leading 13th assist for the primary assist with Schwenzfeier adding the secondary.
Schwenzfeier added an insurance tally at the 3:14 mark of the third period off assists from Rossini and Jess Piracini (Tewksbury, Mass.).
Norwich outshot Bowdoin 29-24 for the game. Junior Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) continued her recent hot streak, making 23 saves to improve to 6-0-1 on the year. Kerri St. Denis made 26 saves for Bowdoin to fall to 2-1-1.
The No. 4/5 nationally-ranked Norwich University women's hockey team is off until Jan. 2 when it hosts Trinity College at 6 p.m. The Cadets however will play three exhibition games in Montreal on Dec. 29, 30 and 31. They will play St. Thomas New Brunswick, Nipissing and Concordia (Quebec) at the three-day Theresa Humes Tournament.
