WORCESTER, Mass. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team had a seven-game winning streak vs. Holy Cross snapped on Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to the Division I Crusaders in their final matchup as New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) opponents.
No. 4-nationally ranked Norwich (15-5-1, 11-2-0 NEHC) got a goal in the final minute from sophomore Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.), but it wasn't enough as Holy Cross scored once in the second and another time in the third to beat NU for the first time since 2008.
Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) and Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) each notched assists on the 6-on-4 power play goal with eight seconds left. It was too little too late though as Holy Cross got goals from Elizabeth Scala and Sam Girard to pull even with Norwich in the league standings.
Junior goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) made 21 saves to fall to 13-2-1 on the year.
The race for the NEHC regular season title tightened up dramatically over the weekend with Holy Cross beating Norwich and Saint Anselm tying Manhattanville. Saint Anselm leads Holy Cross and Norwich by three points and has played one extra game. Manhattanville sits in fourth one point behind NU and Holy Cross.
Saint Anselm meets Holy Cross on Feb. 16 at 7:05 p.m. NU needs at least a tie or a Holy Cross win in order to have a shot at catching Saint Anselm.
In the race for the No. 1 seed in the NEHC Tournament, Norwich's lead over Manhattanville is down to just a single point. The Cadets host Southern Maine and University of New England next weekend in the final regular season home games of the 2016-17 season.
