NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team downed the University of New England 7-1 on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.
Junior defenseman Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a goal and three assists for a four-point night to lead the Cadets' offense in the victory. Sophomore Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) each chipped in with a pair of goals as well.
No. 6/5-nationally ranked Norwich (16-5-1, 12-2-0 NEHC) scored twice in each of the first two periods to take a commanding 4-0 lead after 40 minutes en route to the victory.
Norwich pulled to within a point of Saint Anselm for first place in the NEHC standings with the victory. Manhattanville stayed one point behind NU, while Holy Cross is two points back, but has a game in hand.
Junior Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) opened the scoring at the 5:25 mark of the first period with a goal off assists from Tiberi and Kirsten Watts (Chugiak, Alaska). Schwenzfeier stuffed a rebound past UNE goalie Sydney Helmbrecht on the left doorstep of the crease off after an initial shot from Tiberi was saved.
Rossini scored an unassisted goal at the 18:28 mark of the first period, capitalizing on a UNE turnover by intercepting a pass. She skated in from the left and fired a wrist shot between the body and arm of Helmbrecht to make it 2-0 Norwich with her 12th goal of the season.
Sophomore Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) made it 3-0 with a tap-in goal off a 2-on-1 rush with a perfect pass from Conway from the right wing. Tiberi created the play though hitting Conway with a long tape-to-tape pass from the side of her goal line to Conway at mid ice.
Rossini made it 4-0 with her team-leading 13th goal of the season and second of the night off an assist from Tiberi from behind the net. Rossini collected a pass in the slot after Tiberi skated around the net and she potted the puck into the right side of the net.
Conway made it 5-0 with her ninth of the season with a pretty snipe in the upper corner of the net off an assist from Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.).
UNE (8-12-2, 5-8-1 NEHC) got its lone goal of the game at the 10:14 mark of the third period with a deflection off a NU skate. Gabby Crugnale picked up her team-leading ninth goal of the season with a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that kicked off a NU defender's skate and into the back of the net. Julianne Sheehan and Mary Wirth notched assists.
The Cadets added two more tallies with Conway scoring a shorthanded goal on a backhand after deking the goalie out. Labbe picked up the assist at the 11:16 mark of the third period with a pass from the half boards.
Tiberi scored her sixth goal of the year off an assist from Watts with three seconds to go in the game.
Junior Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) made 14 saves to pick up her 14th win of the season. Helmbrecht made 39 saves to fall to 8-10-1.
Norwich finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while UNE was 1-for-6.
The Cadets return to action on Saturday with a 4 p.m. faceoff against Southern Maine on Senior Day. NU will honor Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.) and Celeste Robert (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) prior to the game.
