Women's Lacrosse: Norwich Closes Season With 18-13 Loss To Assumption
NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Erin Theriault scored two of her game-high six goals in the first overtime to help lift Assumption College to an 18-13 double overtime victory over Norwich University in a non-league women's lacrosse game Monday afternoon at Howard Field.
Shannon Howard netted two of her five goals in the overtime action to help the Greyhounds (2-11) finish the season on a winning note.
Norwich (8-7) was led by Kacey Abbriano, who tallied a team-high five goals and one assist. Chelsea Martin added three goals for the Cadets, while Danielle Del Dotto scored twice.
The Cadets led 13-11 midway through the second half, but Assumption held NU without a goal for the final 23:09 of the game.
The Greyhounds forced overtime on Sarah Roos' unassisted goal with 2:00 to play in regulation. Theriault scored two goals in a span of nine seconds early in the first overtime period to set the tone. Assumption added two more goals later in the stanza to take a commanding 17-13 lead into the second three-minute overtime period.
Norwich was unable to get anything going in either extra session, and Howard put the game away when she scored an unassisted goal early in the second OT.
Norwich got off to a fast start, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the game to jump in front 3-0 at the 25:35 mark. Assumption answered with five unanswered tallies to take a 5-3 lead at the 15:05 mark. Theriault netted three goals during the spurt.
Back-to-back goals by Norwich tied the score at 5-5, but Theriault struck again to make it 6-5 moments later. The Cadets then reeled off three straight markers to move in front 8-6 with 7:31 to play before halftime, but Assumption closed the half strong to knot the score 10-10 at the intermission.
The teams traded goals to start the second half, before Norwich grabbed a 13-11 lead with 17:09 to play.
Norwich goalkeeper Erin McGaffigan played well in goal for the Cadets, making 15 saves on 33 shots. Assumption goalie Julie Verbic stopped 10 saves on 23 shots for the Greyhounds.
Assumption held a 55-32 edge in shots for the game.
Today's game marked the final one for Norwich seniors Alyssa Nicoloro, Katie Magnus and Ashley Haviland. The trio of Cadets was honored during a special on-field Senior Day ceremony at halftime.
