Wrestling: Norwich Reinstates Wrestling Program For 2009-10 Season

Dear Parents:
I am pleased to announce that, due to an outpouring of financial support from friends and alumni of the University, the Norwich wrestling program will be reinstated for the 2009/2010 academic year.
In December Norwich University was forced to make several budget cuts in order to balance the budget and remain a financially strong institution. Included in these cost-saving measures was the difficult decision to eliminate the wrestling program.
After this decision was made I was approached by supporters of Norwich wrestling, including coach Rich Hasenfus and Norwich grad Bob Goodman '86, who wanted to know what could be done to keep the program viable for another season. I informed Rich and Bob they would need to raise $85,000 in order to allow the team to compete next year. A subsequent groundswell of support for Norwich wrestling from alumni, parents and friends has yielded in excess of $85,000 in pledges, one-time gifts, and event fundraising dollars.
I want to thank the wrestling community for rallying behind this cause and enabling a program with a rich history at Norwich to compete for another season. The volunteer group heading the friends of Norwich wrestling plans to continue fundraising efforts in order to support the team for future years.
If you have any questions concerning this decision please call Athletic Director Tony Mariano at (802) 485-2232. I look forward to a successful 2009/2010 wrestling season.
Sincerely,
Richard W. Schneider
