Norwich Sinks Castleton State, 60-10
CASTLETON, Vt. - The Norwich women's rugby team earned its third trip to the NERFU playoffs in as many years with a 60-10 victory over Castleton State College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Cadets finish back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and improve their fall record to 10-0 (5-0 NERFU).
Sophomore wing Clarissa Wynn (New London, Conn.) opened scoring for the "Wick" with a try in the corner. Wynn went on to lead all scorers with 15 points as she converted on 5 of 9 Norwich tries.
Junior wing Ashley de Grasse (Colchester, Vt.) played an inspired match against her former team and scored two tries in the first 40. Joining her with two tries apiece were seniors Sybil Taunton (Brentwood, Calif.) and Charmaine Morris (Detroit, Mich.).
Scoring additional second half tries were senior #8 Berline Marcelin (Miami, Fla.), junior center Ashley Lally (Sparta, N.J.) and sophomore scrumhalf Hailey Ribeiro (Sebastian, Fla.).
"I can't say enough about the team spirit of the Castleton players," said NU head coach Austin Hall. "They never thought about the score, they won many of the battles around the pitch, and they did everything as a team. They taught us some good stuff this weekend and we hope to apply it to our side for the remainder of the season."
The No. 1 ranked Cadets will host Bates (4-4, 3-2 NERFU) in the quarterfinals of the NERFU Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 27. Kickoff time is yet to be determined.
